Oral Health and Oral Hygiene

Regular dental exams and professional cleaning are the best way to prevent problems or to stop small problems from getting worse. Many oral diseases go unnoticed by the patient. Dr. Kang will look for signs of oral disease which may be a sign of serious health problems in other parts of the body. Dr. Kang has the training and expertise to diagnose and treat oral diseases and can recognize when it is necessary to refer to a specialist.

Every one's mouth is unique, not everyone needs six month cleanings. The frequency and type of cleaning is tailored to the health of the person at any particular time since this may change during different parts of their life. Some people are seen for periodontal scaling every 3 months to manage an aggressive form of periodontal disease, others may be well managed with annual cleanings. Dr. Kang and our hygienist's desire is to work with the patient to attain and maintain a healthy mouth. Bleeding and tender gums are not healthy. The gums should not bleed when brushing or flossing. Good home care is the first step in healthy gums. Teeth and the tongue need to be brushed at least twice a day to remove plaque and bacteria that can cause cavities and gum disease. Floss daily to remove plaque where the tooth brush doesn't reach between the teeth and below the gum.

A healthy life style reduces risk of oral disease. Smoking can lead to stained and missing teeth, infected gums and bad breath. More importantly, it can lead to oral cancer, heart disease and a variety of other cancers. Dr. Kang routinely examines the tongue and the floor of the mouth at check up appointments, the most common areas where oral cancer is found.
